Smalltalk in Industrie und Ausbildung
STIA-96

Ilmenau/Suhl, 25.-26. September 1996

Brian M. Barry

Dr. Brian Barry is the Chief Technical Officer of Object Technology International, Inc. (OTI). He has over 12 years of experience in the design and implementation of object-oriented systems, including distributed, client/server, embedded and real-time applications. Dr. Barry has published a number of research papers and articles in the areas of simulation, OO applications, systems integration, and software engineering, and is a frequent speaker on object technology. He has often served on the Program Committees for OOT conferences such as OOPSLA and ECOOP, is a charter member of the ANSI Smalltalk committee, and participates in a number of research review boards. OTI, a subsidiary of IBM Canada, has developed tools and products for end-user applications and embedded systems. In partnership with major companies these tools have been successfully implemented in many industries (publishing, manufacturing, CASE, embedded systems, real time operating systems, application development environments such as IBM's VisualAge and Smalltalk). The company has pioneered the development of a complete object-oriented team programming environment called ENVY.

Using Smalltalk to Develop and Deliver Software Components

Despite the many claims that OO and software components lead to reuse and significant cost reductions, in practice there have been fewer success stories than one might expect. The problems are both economic and technical. We will cover the basics of component-based software engineering, describe some of the pioneering projects, and review the lessons learned. We will discover why Smalltalk has been a major contributor to the success of many leading-edge projects, and see how it provides the ideal 'glue' for assembling software components. Finally we will explore some of the technical challenges which must still be overcome to make component-based software construction a reality.
