Jeff Eastman has been a developer of ORB products and a consultant in the distributed object computing field for several years. As an engineer at Hewlett-Packard, he was the architect of HP's Distributed Smalltalk and helped to develop the early OMG standards. He is currently the vice chairman of the ODMG and has been working within that organization to improve ORB-ODB integration. His most recent product development, DNS's SmalltalkBrokerTM ORB, incorporates common elements from both object standards. SmalltalkBroker is distributed under license by ExperSoft Corporation, Iona Technologies, and will be integrated into GemStone's product family. Jeff's company, Windward Solutions, is a technology and solution provider for organizations using these technologies.
Object-oriented databases (ODBs) have been around for several years. They offer persistent storage of programming language objects, transactions, query, data distribution, and other database services. ODB vendors have a consortium, the Object Database Management Group which has produced an object database standard, ODMG'93. Object Request Brokers (ORBs) are a more recent addition to the distributed computing milieu. They offer programming language remote method invocation, distributed object services, and common object facilities. Based upon the work of the Object Management Group consortium, ORBs from several vendors are now able to interoperate using standardized, CORBA, protocols. In this talk, the author compares and contrasts the models and terminology of these two object technology organizations and shows how their products can be made to cooperate to enrich the distributed computing landscape.
