STJA99

Intention

STJA is dedicated to advanced object-oriented concepts and technologies with emphasis on the use of Smalltalk and Java and in general. A unique aspect of this conference is the profile of its participants: Traditionally, about one half of the participants come from academia and another half from industry. With this back-ground, STJA aims at providing an effective forum for researchers, students, and practitioners to meet, present their research and experiences, and exchange ideas.

This year, the main STJA conference will be accompanied by a number of satellite events dedicated to specific areas:

  • 5th Conference on Smalltalk and Java in Industry and Education (STJA)
    http://www-stja.transit-online.de/stja
  • 5th Workshop on Multimedia Information and Communication Systems (MIK)
    http://www-stja.transit-online.de/mik
  • 1st Workshop on New Media in Research and Education (NMFL)
    http://www-stja.transit-online.de/nmfl
  • 1st International Symposium of Generative and Component-Based Software Engineering (GCSE)
    http://www-stja.transit-online.de/gcse

The submission topics and guidelines for the main conference and the two workshops MIK and NMFL are listed below. For the separate GCSE'99 CfP, see the symposium's site at http://www-stja.transit-online.de/gcse

5th Conference on Smalltalk and Java in Industry and Education (STJA)

The conference provides a broad forum for the presentation and discussion of topics that cover interesting application oriented research aspects. Interesting topics include, but are not limited to:

  • object-oriented modeling
  • object-oriented modeling methodologies and languages (UML, OML)
  • software patterns
  • development and use of frameworks
  • component centered technology
  • applications of Java and Smalltalk frameworks (as San Francisco, Bolero, etc.)
  • Java and Smalltalk: experiences in industry and research
  • object-oriented and object-relational database management system
  • development and use of distributed object-oriented systems
  • object-oriented CASE tools
  • quality assurance in software projects
  • agent technology and software development

5th Workshop on Multimedia Information and Communication Systems (MIK) http://www-stja.transit-online.de/mik

  • applications for the Internet/Intranet
  • Internet and electronic markets
  • teleteaching and telelearning systems
  • Helpdesk systems
  • security in networks
  • multimedia systems and tools
  • information retrieval in distributed systems

1st Workshop on New Media in Research and Education (NMFL)

  • computer based training (CBT)
  • virtual reality, virtual prototyping
  • virtual studio
  • 3D-visualisation
  • interaction in digital audio-/video sequences
  • DVD (digital versatile disc)

Submissions:

In order to stimulate an extensive exchange of ideas between different groups we strongly encourage the submission of papers from   both research as well as industry

  • research papers (about 10 pages (5.000 words))
  • papers from industry/users (3-6 pages (1.500-3.000 words))

Research papers have to indicate in what way they will contribute to the aim of the conference.
Papers from industry/users are expected to explicitly address unsolved problems and their resulting demands on research.
Submissions can be sent either by e-mail (accepted formats are Postscript Level 2, MS Word, Framemaker) or by regular mail (five copies of the paper please).

Tutorials

STJA will also feature several tutorials in which qualified experts will cover specific application-oriented subjects (either on an introductory level or on an expert level, duration: 3-4 hours). Interested speakers are invited to submit a proposal describing the main intentions, the significant contributions of the tutorial, and the intended audience in
about 2 pages. Additional information about the submission process will be published at the conference web site:
