Building Embedded Systems Using Objects, Components and Virtual Machines

Since the early 80s, we have been involved in the development of embedded systems using object technology. We started with OOPC, the first Objective C dialect, then extended Forth, then to Smalltalk, and then to Java. ENVY/Smalltalk and ENVY/Developer (now IBM's VA technology)were created as an internal tools to support embedded developers in military and commercial embedded projects. For the past 4 years we have worked closely with IBM's new Pervasive Computing (PvC) division to help customers in the codesign of embedded products. These experiences have very much influenced our most recent component and tool technologies which is in VisualAge Embedded Edition. In this talk we discuss our experiences, the process we have found that works, and doesn't work. The challenges of building product line architectures which can accommodate the constraints and changing needs of embedded product engineering cannot be addressed with write once run anywhere hype, and the class library API of the month.
