Frameworks elevate encapsulation and reuse to the level of largegrained components, namely groups of collaborating classes. The abstract model defined in a framework is easily customized into an applicationspecific model through static subclassing and method overriding. However, this implies nonindependent development of the application and framework models and excludes the possibility of dynamically deploying the framework within an application in multiple, potentially conflicting ways.
We describe an architecture for managing such dynamic framework customizations, based on the notion of a dynamic multiclass adapter . The adapter employs the use of Java inner classes to achieve dynamic, noninvasive, composite object customization.

Recursive types definitions and patternmatching are two useful builtin features of functional languages. There is no such mechanism in the Java language. In this article, we investigate different implementations to support these features in Java. First, we review methods to define recursive types. Then, we expose several approaches allowing to simulate pattern matching on structures of these types. Finally, we present reuse techniques for algorithms featuring this mechanism.

C++ Function Object Binders Made Easy

Jaakko Järvi

Turku Centre for Computer Science
Lemminkaisenkatu 14 A
FIN-20520 Turku, Finland
email: jaakko.jarvi@cs.utu

A novel argument binding mechanism is proposed to be used with STL algorithm invocations. Binding can be applied directly, without any adaptors, with non-member function pointers, const and non-const member function pointers and STL unary and binary function objects. The types, as well as the number of arguments in the functions to be bound can be practically arbitrary, argument list lengths up to few dozens of elements can be supported.
The free arguments are expressed as special placeholders in the argument list allowing binding in any argument position. Hence, bind calls preserve the resemblance to the function prototype of the bound function. The syntax is simple and intuitive.
Binding can be applied recursively. This results in a versatile function decomposition mechanism. The binding mechanism is efficient, inducing no or negligible runtime cost.

Web-based Network Computing, a future IT-Architecture for global merging Companies

Wilfried Reimann

DaimlerChrysler
Software Engineering ITM-Headquarter Stuttgart

The combination of evolving business drivers, changing customer demands and the evolution of enabling technology is producing a business revolution. Electronic connections are changing the way companies deal with partners, with information access, services and speed as the key differentiators. In fact, Web connections make it critical to optimize business processes across enterprises, rather than just within an enterprise. Success depends on excellent client service, and sales structures realigned to provide value in terms of packaging customized services and products for each individual client. Organizations are morphing from vertically integrated supply chains to interconnected eco-systems of suppliers and clients. The evolution of business into E-Businesses, operating within the context of a globally interconnected economy is one of the predominant trends in business as well as in technology.
World wide Web-based Network Computing and processes are dramatically changing the way global companies conduct business with suppliers, customers and employees. Global acting companies develop competitive advantages through the use of these technologies. All trading partners in global companies, this means employees, suppliers, customers and all products of the company, define an Extended Enterprise. The IT-Architecture of an Extended Enterprise is a key success factor for enabling the business in a global acting company.
The resulting increased reliance on the Internet, Intranet and Extranet platforms will continue to impact and evolve the infrastructure and support services. In merging global acting companies, cross-functional teams in different physical locations, work together in common business processes or projects. During the merger phase of two companies (the today situation in many companies) nearly everything (e.g. organization, culture, physical locations, business processes, IT-Systems ..) is changing dramatically. During the merger the IT-Organization has to define a new IT-Architecture for future IT-Systems as soon as possible (Speed, Speed Speed..).The internal IT-Architecture of existing IT-System is a main success factor for enabling this change.
The Web-based Network Computing will be the future IT-Architecture to support distributed virtual teams and cross processes in the Extended Enterprise. The key aspects of this IT-Architecture is Object Technology, JAVA, Distributed n-tier Architecture, Middleware a powerful Network (Internet and Extranet) and Component-Based-Development. Especially companies merging with US-based companies will benefit from the Internet-Technologies. On average, U.S. E-Commerce processes and technologies are two years ahead of the rest of the world.

Proper change management is crucial for Java to classify as a component technology for the WWW. In this paper, we investigate the current approach taken by Java for change management and argue that it is restricted in two ways. First, it deals only with a restricted set of evolu- tion incompatibilities. Second, the approach taken is strongly coupled to the way Java resolves references, providing binary compatibility only un- der that condition that preexisting clients of the evolved component are never recompiled. We conclude that proper change management should be decoupled from the reference resolution semantics. For this reason we present a framework for analyzing Java binaries, which would be part of an independent change management system.
