Curriculum vitae:

Holds an M.Sc. degree from the Eindhoven University of Technology and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Twente. Currently, he is working as a full professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Twente and also affiliated with the institute Centre for Telematics and Information Technology. He is the head of the Software Engineering chair and the leader of the Twente Research and Education on Software Engineering (TRESE) Group.

He was the program co-chair of the ECOOP'97 conference. He has been serving as a program committee member of various international conferences and he was the tutorial chair of the ECOOP'92 conference.
He gave more than 80 international and in-company courses in the Netherlands, and in other European countries, and at the ECOOP'91, OOPSLA'92, ECOOP'95, ICECCS'95, ECOOP'98, ECOOP'99, OOPSLA'99, SPLC1'00 and ECOOP'00 conferences.

Mehmet Aksit has been the user and developer of object-oriented systems since 1983. He is specialized in the application of object and component-oriented methods to practical software systems. He has been involved in designing architectures for several large industrial projects.

Together with the members of the TRESE group, he has introduced the Quality-Oriented Software Engineering paradigm. This paradigm is based on the following techniques:
* An aspect-oriented programming technique based on composition-filters for composing and reusing software components which employ complex behavior synchronization, real-time, constraints etc.);
* Techniques to synthesize architectures from solution domains for creating stable software systems;
* Application of fuzzy-logic for modeling and controling software development processes;
* A formalism called Design Algebra for balancing various quality factors at different stages of software development. These concepts and techniques have been published in various papers.

Homepage: images.ee.umist.ac.uk/nigel

Curriculum vitae:

Moved to UMIST in 1995 after twelve years at the University of York, where I was a Reader in the Department of Electronics. Prior to York, I taught in the Physics Department at the University of Keele for five years after being in industry for several years (Pye Telecommunications and EEV). I hold degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from the Universities of Bradford and Cambridge.
At UMIST, I have presented modules on computer networking, pattern recognition and neural networks, image engineering and advanced analogue circuit design. Over the years, I seem to have given courses on all aspects of electronic engineering except electromagnetic theory (which is a small blessing, at least).

I head the Image Engineering Research Group and am Chair of the Departmental Research Committee. As for research interests, then as this is our research group web-site I will refer you to the inscription over the entrance to Sir Christopher Wren's St. Paul's Cathedral:

Curriculum vitae:

Nick Jennings is Professor of Computer Science in the Department of Electronics and Computer Science (one of only 6 computer science departments in the country to get the top rating of 5* for its research) at Southampton University where he carries out basic and applied research in agent-based computing. He is head of the Intelligence, Agents, Multimedia Group (which consists of some 100 research staff and postgraduate students) and is also the Chief Scientific Officer for lost wax.

Professor Jennings helped pioneer the use of agent-based techniques for real-world applications; developing systems in the domains of: process control, business process management (agent-enabled workflow), e-commerce, telecommunications network management, virtual laboratories, and scientific data interpretation. The early systems represent some of the first real-world applications of multiagent technology. This application-oriented experience highlighted the need to focus research attention on the field of agent-based software engineering where he developed the Gaia methodology. On the theoretical side, he has made contributions to the areas of automated negotiation and auctions, cooperative problem solving, and socially rational decision making.

Professor Jennings has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences (including: IJCAI, OOPSLA, ICMAS, PRICAI), he initiated two major international conferences (The Practical Application of Agents and Multi-Agent Systems (PAAM) and Autonomous Agents), and initiated the Agent Theories, Architectures and Languages (ATAL) workshop series. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems, a member of the scientific advisory boards of Frictionless Commerce, ISheads! and the German AI Institute (DFKI), a steering committee member of the International Conference on Autonomous Agents, the ATAL workshop, and the UK Multi-Agent Systems Workshop (UKMAS), a series editor for Springer-Verlag's Agent Technology series, a member of the management committee of AgentLink (the European network of excellence in agent-based computing), and a founding director of the International Foundation for Multi-Agent Systems. He has published some 150 articles on various facets of agent-based computing, holds 2 patents (3 more pending), written one monograph, and co-edited five books. He is in the top 175 most cited computer scientists (out of 600,000) according to the citeseer digital library.

He was the recipient of the Computers and Thought Award (the premier award for a young AI scientist) in 1999 for his contributions to practical agent architectures and applications of multi-agent systems (this is the first time in the Award's 30 year history that it has been given to someone based in Europe) and the receipient of an IEE Achievement Medal in 2000 for his work on agent-based computing.

Curriculum vitae:

I'm a member of High Performance Extensible Systems Group (HiPeX) , at City University in London, which was formerly known as Systems Architecture Research Centre (SARC).
Recently I finished my PhD research. Yuuuuppiiii!.

Before I came to London, I had received the Mgr degree (equiv. MSc) in Distributed Operating Systems from Faculty of Mathematics and Physics , Charles University , Prague in 1995. My Master thesis "Processor Allocation in Tightly Coupled Multiprocessors" (available in postscript) proposed algorithms for dynamic load balancing in tightly coupled multiprocessors.

Over the last three years, I was involved in the following projects: MAGNET, a dynamic resource manager (which was actually my PhD) and BITS, a component-based operating system.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My PhD --- MAGNET: A Dynamic Resource Management Architecture
My thesis "MAGNET: A Dynamic Resource Management Architecture" (available in postscript and compressed postscript) proposed an extensible tuplespace-based framework, called MAGNET, based on dynamic trading requests for services against applications' demands. One of the key feature of the architecture is to enable services to be requested indirectly by a type of service they provide, rather then directly by their name. In addition, MAGNET supports user-customization, QoS-based resource definition and negotiation, runtime adaptation (dynamic rebinding to more suitable services) , information monitoring and scalability of the architecture.
More information can be found on MAGNET's web page or check my papers on MAGNET.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BITS: A Component-based Operating System
Also, at the early stage of my research I invertigated BITS, a component-based operating system, overcoming drawbacks of traditional kernels, and providing a unified, fine-grained environment where requirements on dynamic resource management can be met.
Have a look at BITS' web page or our papers on BITS.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My Research Interests
Resource management in dynamically changing adaptive systems
Mobile computing
Dynamic trading of components, information matching and retrieval
QoS-based resource definition and negotiation
Support for adaptivity in systems with frequently-changing characteristics (mobile, time and location aware etc.)

Curriculum vitae:

Quotes from Industry Thought Leaders
_(Craig is) a great teacher, a brilliant methodologist, and an _OO guru_._
_Philippe Kruchten, author, The RUP: An Introduction, and Rational Fellow.
_Too few people have a knack for explaining things. Fewer still have a handle on software analysis and design. Craig Larman has both._
_John Vlissides, author, Design Patterns and Pattern Hatching.
_Craig is articulate, moves people, is caring, is visionary and very perceptive about what works and what does not._
_Peter Coad, CEO, TogetherSoft, and author, Java Modeling in Color with UML.
_People often ask me which is the best book to introduce them to the world of OO design. Ever since I came across it Applying UML and Patterns has been my unreserved choice._
_Martin Fowler, Chief Scientist, ThoughtWorks, and author, UML Distilled.
Introduction Craig Larman is the author of Applying UML and Patterns_An Introduction to OOA/D and the Unified Process, the world_s best-selling text on OOA/D, iterative development, and the UML, translated to many languages and used worldwide in industry and colleges. He also co-authored the Java 2 Performance and Idiom Guide, and is currently writing Agile and Iterative Development: A Manager_s Guide. He is known throughout the international software community as an expert and coach in object technologies, OOA/D, patterns, the UML, modeling, the Unified Process (UP), combining the UP with XP and Scrum practices, and iterative agile development methods.
Craig is a popular speaker at public and private industry conferences, and presents both keynotes and tutorials . Please see www.craiglarman.com for an updated description of current activities.
He travels worldwide to fulfill his passion to serve people through coaching, speaking, and education, helping software organizations succeed with high-impact best practices such as iterative and agile methods, design patterns, automated continuous integration, and test-first
design and programming.
Background
In conjunction with writing and speaking, Craig serves clients globally as an independent consultant, helping people and organizations adopt modern development processes, and object design skills. He also serves as Chief Scientist at Valtech USA, an advanced technology consulting and skills transfer organization. Previously, Craig served as Technical Director at ObjectSpace, a creative group that built products such as Voyager, the agent-based distributed
computing platform.
Since the mid-80s, Craig has assisted thousands in Canada, the USA, India, and Europe in adopting skillful development processes, developing object systems, or in learning to apply OOA/D, architectural analysis, requirements analysis, analysis and design patterns, the UML, C++, Java technologies, and Smalltalk.
He started developing software in 1977, working in high-power languages such as APL. In the early 1980s, he started to focus on artificial intelligence and knowledge systems , and worked as a Lisp, Prolog, Smalltalk, and 4GL
developer and consultant, while also coaching people in object technologies. He_s helped build applications ranging from a knowledge system for the interpretation of cytogenetic defects, to investment management from payments
for future funeral services (you should see the domain model), to high-performance simulation systems.
Craig holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in computer science from beautiful SFU in Vancouver, BC, with research emphasis in artificial intelligence, OO knowledge representations, and case-based reasoning.

My research interests lie in; systems architecture and performance. In particular I am interested in operating systems and database management systems as well as next-generation information provision. RAE Publications can be found here!

I am currently affiliated to the Distributed and Intelligent Systems group. I am currently principal investigator for the new Patia Project looking at distributed adaptive web servers. I was principal investigator for the Kendra project investigating how component-based systems can improve Internet performance through self-adapting systems and caching. My current interests lie in component-based operating systems and how this affects other systems architectures (e.g. DBMS).

I was group leader for the former Systems Architecture Research Centre and its successor HiPeX where I was project leader on projects concerned with interoperability and high-performance database systems (see Iriss and Prima). The PRIMA project investigated performance issues in the use of multicomputer architectures for relational database management systems. At my previous university I also looked at the use of hybrid simulation modelling as a means to obtain quick accurate performance predictions in database processing.

Currently within the School of Informatics I am the Chair of the Research Student Committee and Systems Architecture Teaching Domain leader. In the Department of Computing I look after research related aspects and am Senior Tutor for Research. I am part of the University's Course Review Committee. Finally, I am a member of the British Computer Society and the IEEE, and am a Chartered Engineer .

In July 2001 I joined Imperial College's Department of Computing as a Senior Lecturer.

Hobbies
Sports
Karate In my spare time (which is very rare lately) I am participating at the KC Wadokan Traunstein. At the moment I have the 4th Kyu (purple girdle).
Mountaineering As I come from the Bavarian Alpes, I am very fond of the mountains. In summer and autumn, I like it very much to stay some days in the mountains together with some friends. In winter and spring, I used to go skiing, but I didn't have the time for that lately and also there is not as much snow now as it used to be.
Sailing/Windsurfing When we are visiting my grandparents in my holidays, I go sailing very often. However, it is not resticted to sailing alone; windsurfing is also very much fun.:-)
Computer-Related
Linux I am a strong advocate of the Linux Operating System and Open Source in general. For this reason, most of my projects are available as Open Source. I am also a member of the Linux User Group Traunstein.
XML One of my latest "hobbies" is the XML markup language and semi-structured data in general. I have already used much of its capabilities in the JWebMail Project. Currently, I am working on a unification based language for declaratively querying XML data (see Projects for detail).

Curriculum vitae:

Dr. Kurt Sundermeyer studied physics in Hamburg and received his PhD with a
thesis in theoretical particle physics. He spent one year at the theory group
at MIT, working already at that time on the nowadays fashionable string
theories (this as a hint to insiders). After an assistantship at the Univ.
Wuppertal he took the position of an assistant professor at the Freie
Universität Berlin, where he switched to mathematical physics. He is still
Privatdozent at FU Berlin.
1986 Kurt Sundermeyer left the university and started a second career in
industrial research. (This was just at the peak of excitement in Artificial
Intelligence.) He worked in the knowledge based systems group on diagnosis,
uncertainty reasoning and distributed problem solving. The latter was the germ
for his curiosity in agents. Gradually in the last 10 years an agent team was
formed, which is a group of 20 people by now. Since one year this group
concentrates on research in manufacturing planning&control and in supply chain
management.
