Dr. Gul Agha is Director of the Open Systems Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Professor in the Department of Computer Science. His widely cited work, "Actors: A Model of Concurrent Computing in Distributed Systems," (MIT Press, 1986) provided a basis for a number of research projects in concurrent programming. He has co-edited another book, "Research Directions in Concurrent Object Oriented Programming" (MIT Press, 1993).

The goal of Professor Agha's research is to understand the nature of concurrent computation. Results of the research will lead to new ways for building and maintaining open distributed systems. Specifically, Agha's group is developing concurrent programming languages and systems which support applications with high-performance, fault-tolerance or real-time requirements. The group's research is both theoretical and practical. The goal of the theory is to provide a clear semantics for new programming constructs and software composition techniques. The goal of developing systems to experiment with the ideas and provide a proof of principle.

The research is based on the Actors, a model of concurrent objects for which Professor Agha is recognized as a prime exponent. Some recent accomplishments of his group include: building the fastest run-time systems available to support fine-grained object migration; developing a theory of actor systems which provides powerful proof techniques for open distributed computing; a distributed real-time programming language; visualization tools; a software architecture for defining reusable protocols; and a methodology for coordinating distributed objects.

Born 1973 in Weimar, GDR, I grew up chewing grass and hunting my shadow in the beautiful and far-off valley of Plinz.

Later on, I visited the math/science school "Carl Zeiss" of Jena, the IVA in Halle, worked in a One World shop there and ended up in Berlin, to study Computer Science and Philosophy at Humboldt-University (with friendly support from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung). In April 2000, I finished my studies and joined the Socionics project. Currently, my main fields of interest include Cognitive Science, cryptology and Rehabilitational Computing. I am currently working at the AI department within the RoboCup group and a loose Cognitive Science group. I focus my efforts on artificial emotions.
Main areas of my interest in Computer Science include Digital Media, Cryptology and Artificial Intelligence (primarily 'motivated' systems and artificial emotion), and computer soccer within the RoboCup project.

In 1998, I came as a graduate to the University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand and did some work on Lexical Attraction models.
I owe the people down under a lot, and I do recommend studying there at any time!

During my stay in NZ, I became a member of Mensa New Zealand (and my house is open to travelling SIGHT-members).

Petra Becker-Pechau is currently doing research on the workshop_s topic and on
object- oriented architectures in general. She has several years of experience in commercial object-oriented projects as a software developer, architect and project leader. Mein Name ist Jörg Benze, geb. am 24.06.1970 in Frankfurt/Main. Nach meinem Abitur habe ich Elektrotechnik (Fachrichtung Regelungstechnik) an der Technischen Universität Darmstadt studiert. Die Schwerpunkte meines Studiums waren Robotik und Bildverarbeitung. Seit Januar 1997 bin ich als System-Ingenieur in der Abteilung "Technical Operations" der Controlware GmbH beschäftigt. Im Juli 1998 übernahm ich die Betreuung und Weiterentwicklung des Datenbanksystems, mit dem innerhalb der Abteilung "Technical Operations" bundesweit die Bearbeitung der Serviceaufträge gesteuert wird. Der Einsatz von HelpDesk-Systemen zur Optimierung der Geschäftsabläufe entwickelte sich für mich alsbald zu einem faszinierenden Arbeitsgebiet. Seit Februar 1999 bin ich externer Doktorant am Institut für Praktische Informatik / Fachgebiet Telematik der Technischen Universität Ilmenau und widme mich, neben der Erforschung und Weiterentwicklung der HelpDesk-System Technologie, auch der Ausbildung des studentischen Nachwuchses im Bereich der Netzwerktechnologien durch Workshops und der Betreuung von Praktikas und Diplomarbeiten.

Claus Brabrand received his PhD in computer science from the BRICS Research Center at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, 2003. He is currently a research scientist at INRIA and the University of Bordeaux INRIA/LaBRI. Areas of interest and research include: domain specific languages, general purpose languages, program analysis, compilers, and Web technology.

Holger Breitling is a research assistant at the University of Hamburg and a
professional software architect and consultant at it-wps Workplace Solutions Ltd. He is a senior architect of the JWAM framework, which is both a research subject and the platform on which it-wps has built many applications for its clients. He has several years' consulting and programming experience and has recently held tutorials at XP Universe 2002 and Requirements Engineering 2002.

Jorge Cardoso (jcardoso@uma.pt) received a B.A. (1995) and a M.S. (1998) in Computer Science from the University of Coimbra (Portugal), and a Ph.D. also in Computer Science from the University of Georgia (2002).
His research work concentrated on workflow QoS management and semantic composition of workflows. Research results were implemented in the METEOR project at the LSDIS lab. METEOR system is a workflow process management system oriented to support mission-critical enterprise applications requiring high scalability and robustness. It is fully distributed, scalable and includes multilevel security mechanisms.

I have spent a major part of my life in the enchanting city of Mumbai. For those who still aren't aware Mumbai was formerly (more) famous as Bombay. I did all my schooling under the aegis of the Atomic Energy Education Society (i'm sure none of you care or even interested in finding out, but then, i don't mind it. I am a PhD student at the System and Software Engineering Lab, which is part of the Computer Science Department of the Faculty of Sciences and of the Informatics Department of the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. I am funded by Funded by the Flemish Institute for the Improvement of the Scientific-Technological Research in Flanders (Belgium). Charles Consel is a professor of Computer Science at ENSEIRB/University of Bordeaux I. He leads the Compose group at INRIA/LaBRI. He has been designing and implementing domain-specific languages (DSLs) for a variety of areas including device drivers, programmable routers, and stream processing. These DSLs have been validated with real-sized applications and showed measurable benefits compared to applications written in general-purpose languages. His research interests include language design, program analysis, compilation and compiler generation, prototyping, program transformation, and formal specification.

He is a Professor of Computational Methods in the Computational Engineering Design Research Group (CED) Group within the School of Engineering Sciences (SES). The School was awarded grade 5* in the 2001 national assessment of research in UK universities.

The primary research interests of the group are in the three broad themed areas of optimisation and design search, applied computational modelling, and computational methods. This spans design optimisation, solid material modelling, computational electromagnetics, repetitive structures, contact mechanics, structural dynamics and computational methods.

The CED aims to be a centre of excellence for multi-disciplinary engineering simulation and design which combines together a range of analytical, computational, and experimental techniques. Our strength lies in this sophisticated mix of engineering methods coupled to industrial applications: a particular focus for our activities over the next few years will be the development of grid-based problem-solving services for use by academia and industry.

Krzysztof Czarnecki is an Assistant Professor at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Before coming to Waterloo, he spent 8 years at DaimlerChrysler Research working on the practical applications of generative programming (GP). Together with Ulrich Eisenecker, he co-authored the book "Generative Programming" (Addison-Wesley, 2000). His current research focuses on realizing the synergies between GP and MDA.

Schahram Dustdar is an Associate Professor at the Distributed Systems Group, Information Systems Institute, Vienna University of Technology (TU-Wien). He received his M.Sc. (1990) and PhD. degrees (1992) in Business Informatics (Wirtschaftsinformatik) from the University of Linz, Austria. His work experience includes several years as the founding head of the Center for Informatics (ZID) at the University of Art and Industrial Design in Linz (1991-1999), Austrian project manager of the MICE EU-project (1993 - 97), and director of Coordination Technologies at the Design Transfer Center in Linz (1999 - 2000). While on sabbatical leave he was a post-doctoral research scholar (Erwin-Schrödinger scholarship) at the London School of Economics (Information Systems Department) (1993 and 1994), and a visiting research scientist at NTT Multimedia Communications Labs in Palo Alto, USA during 1998.

Since 1999 he works as the co-founder and chief scientist of Caramba Labs Software AG (CarambaLabs.com) in Vienna, a venture capital funded software company focused on software for collaborative processes in teams. Caramba Labs was nominated for several (international and national) awards: World Technology Award in the category of Software (2001); Top-Startup companies in Austria (Cap Gemini Ernst & Young) (2002); MERCUR Innovationspreis der Wirtschaftskammer (2002).

He has published some 50 scientific papers as conference-, journal-, and book contributions. He has published 3 academic books as well as one professional book. His latest book, co-authored with H. Gall and M. Hauswirth, is on software architectures for distributed systems (2003), Springer-Verlag. He has been working on generative programming for more than five years and is responsible for several projects in generative programming research funded by industry and public institutes.

Iain Falconer is the inventor of e-GEN and one of the world’s premier authorities on the subject of model driven architecture and development, and generative development and has won national recognition from Nokia and Vodafone for his pioneering work developing wireless applications. He is also co-founder and CTO of Gentastic! Mr. Falconer is originally from Glasgow, Scotland. Prior to co-founding Gentastic!, Mr. Falconer worked as a technical architect for such companies as Oracle and BEA Systems.

Lidia Fuentes is an Associate Professor at the Languages and Computer Science department of the Málaga University since 1993. She received a M.Sc degree in Computer Science in 1992 and the Doctor degree in 1998 from the same University.

Jeff Gray is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).

He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science in May of 2002 from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. While at Vanderbilt, Jeff was a research assistant at the Institute for Software Integrated Systems (ISIS), where he worked on a DARPA project - Program Composition for Embedded Systems (PCES). He also worked on an ISIS project that was funded by the Boeing company. Jeff's thesis advisor was Dr. Stephen Schach, and his dissertation committee members were Dr. Janos Sztipanovits, Dr. Gabor Karsai, Dr. Larry Dowdy, Dr. Mike Fitzpatrick, and Dr. Fritz Barnes.

In 1991, he graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Computer Science from West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. Jeff completed the undergraduate degree in three years and was a WVU Honors Student. As an undergraduate, he made the Dean's list every semester and was named a WVU Arts and Sciences Scholar in 1990 and 1991 (1 of 25 students from over 3,000). In 1993, he received an MS in Computer Science (also from WVU). His MS advisor was Dr. Murali Sitaraman and his thesis committee members were Dr. Frances Van Scoy and Dr. Doug Harms.

Jeff graduated high school in 1988 from the Linsly School (founded in 1814), in Wheeling, West Virginia. He was a member of the last all-male graduating class before the school went coed. His research mentors were Dr. Garth Innocenti and Mr. Mike Chokel.

Simon Helsen is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Waterloo, where he recently joined Krzysztof Czarnecki. His current research focusses on the applicability and viability of MDA in the context of Generative Programming. Before coming to Waterloo, he was a research assistant at the Universities of Tübingen and Freiburg where he worked with Peter Thiemann on program specialization and partial evaluation.

Joshua Huang is the Assistant Director of the E-Business Technology Institute. He has many years experience in databases and data mining research in The Commonwealth Science and Industry Research Organization (CISRO), Australia. He was also associated with The Cooperative Research Centre of The Advanced Computational Systems in Australia (ACSys) in the Australian National University as a research staff in the ACSys' data mining program. In ACSys, he developed new data clustering algorithms, which have been accepted and used in a number of research organizations and companies around the world. He has published many research papers in international conferences and journals including Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, and IEEE Transactions.

Before joining ETI in early 2000, he worked at MIP Australia as a Senior Consultant and helped Australia companies successfully implement numerous solutions. He was consulting on a number of world class business intelligence software products, including the data mining system Clementine (SPSS), the leading Relational OLAP system Microstrategy (Microstrategy) and the data extraction tool DataStage (Ardent). He was the principal consultant of Clementine in Australia and New Zealand, the Education coordinator of Microstrategy in Asia.

Dr Huang is frequently invited to give speeches on data mining, business intelligence and CRM at industrial seminars and forums in Asia Pacific countries and regions, such as Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Dr Huang received his PhD degree from The Royal Institute of Technology in SWEDEN.

Marc-Philippe Huget is research assistant for a three year contract based on a EPSRC fund in Agent ART team and works since 1998 on interaction protocol engineering. His PhD subject was about interaction protocol engineering from analysis to conformance testing. For the moment, he follows his research on interaction protocol engineering and above all on validation and model-checking. Marc-Philippe Huget is also editor of the book "Communication in Multiagent Systems" published by Springer-Verlag (LNCS 2650). Most relevant publications can be found at the previous Internet addresses. One also wants to mention that a tutorial on the same topic was successfully presented at AAMAS 2002.

Immediately before coming to Rutgers, I was an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. I taught computer science courses there. I came to Dickinson from Maine, where I was an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics Department at Bates College in Lewiston. There, I directed Bates' computer science program, taught computer science (and, occasionally, mathematics) courses, and pursued research in programming languages. Before that, I was a Research Associate at the Pacific Software Research Center (PacSoft) of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology (OGI). There I worked with John Launchbury and Jeff Lewis to implement and study properties of automatable transformation-based methods --- such as short cut fusion --- for improving the efficiency of functional programs. I also finished writing the book Deduction Systems, co-authored with Rolf Socher-Ambrosius.

Prior to joining PacSoft, I was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS). At HWS I taught both mathematics and computer science courses --- integral and differential calculus, Pascal programming, discrete math, real analysis, topology, automata theory, and algorithmic graph theory, to name a few --- and directed an independent study in equational unification. I also researched lambda calculus- and combinatory logic-based order-sorted higher-order unification algorithms and methods for solving simplification ordering constraints, although this was mostly done during a sixteen-month leave I spent with AG Siekmann at the Universitaet des Saarlandes in Saarbruecken, Germany. These research projects grew naturally out of my dissertation work --- directed by Dan Dougherty at Wesleyan University --- on equational and higher-order equational unification. I now find it strange to recall that when I started graduate school I wanted to become an algebraist. But that was before I had encountered theoretical computer science, Church's amazing lambda calculus, or Curry's computationally equivalent combinatory logic.

Practical and theoretical aspects of short cut fusion and similar program transformations remain the focus of my research. I am currently investigating the effectiveness of these fusion techniques in practice with Franklyn Turbak in the Lumberjack Project, and have been working with Eelco Visser to adapt them to the strategy language Stratego. I am also interested in the role parametricity plays in proving the correctness of short cut fusion and other "free theorems" for various calculi approximating modern functional languages. Most of my recent work has been concerned with this issue.

Although I am interested in both computer science and mathematics individually, my primary interests lie in the fertile area where the two disciplines intersect --- logic, automated deduction, formal languages, semantics, and the theory of computation, for example.

Jaakko Järvi is currently a post doctoral researcher in the Open Systems
Laboratory within the Pervasive Technology Laboratories at Indiana University. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Turku, Finland. His research interests include generic programming and programming languages. He's a contributing member of the C++ Boost community, and actively participates in the C++ standardization work.

Professor Keedy was born and spent his childhood in Leeds, England. After leaving school he worked as a tax official in Leeds, Wakefield and Cardiff (where he was responsible inter alia for the tax assessments of the British Prime Minister).

From 1961 to 1964 he studied theology at King's College, University of London (awarded Bachelor of Divinity (Honours); Associate of King's College). After a postgraduate year (1964-65) as a World Council of Churches Scholar at the University of Mainz, West Germany, he returned to Trinity College, University of Oxford (1965), where he completed a Doctor of Philosophy in theology.

In 1968 he joined International Computers Ltd. in Kidsgrove as a maintenance programmer (System 4 J operating system). After a further period as a senior programmer and project leader (System 4 Multijob operating system), he became a Design Consultant and a member of the central design team for the new ICL 2900 Series VME operating system.

In 1974 he became a Lecturer (later Senior Lecturer) in the Department of Computer Science at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, where he established the Monads Project. During his time at Monash he became an Australian citizen and he also completed a PhD in computer science.

In 1982 he became a full Professor of Operating Systems at the Technical University of Darmstadt in West Germany, and the first Director of its Institute of System Architecture.

In 1985 he returned to Australia as Foundation Professor of Computer Science at the University of Newcastle, N.S.W. where he established a new Department of Computer Science and introduced the first Bachelor of Computer Science degree in an Australian university.

In 1988 he returned for family reasons to Germany, where he became full Professor of Practical Computer Science at the University of Bremen.

Since1993 he holds the position of full Professor of Computer Structures at the University of Ulm, Germany. Since 1998 he also has an honorary appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University (Melbourne, Australia). He has recently started a new secure operating system project known as SPEEDOS.

Stefan Ketteman is a researcher and consultant at the Fraunhofer IESE. Stefan
worked in industry as a professional software developer for several years. Actually, he brings his practical experience into several research and industrial projects in the context of software product line engineering. His work focuses on product line architectures and component technologies.
Stefan received a M.S. in Economical Computer Science from the University of Mannheim.

I was born at the 15.01.1970 in Ingolstadt (rather exactly between München and Nürnberg - deepest Bavaria). There, I also went to school finishing with the "Abitur" in 1989. After that I started studying computer science in Würzburg (subsidiary subject: geography). In 1994 I got my "Diplom". About 2 weeks later I began working as a research assistant at the computer science department in Würzburg. From 1994 to 1998 I worked in the projects with D3 where I maintained (and extended) the knowledge acquisition and explanation components. My personal research is about multi-agent simulation and modeling with a special focus developing models without the necessity to program in a more or less traditional (simulation) language. I got my PhD in october 2000. Now I'm working as an assistant professor on my habilitation and at the AI department, still here in Würzburg.

Jean-Luc Koning is Assistant Professor at the Technological University of Grenoble INPG. Since 1993, he has been works on interaction protocols and more specifically on its engineering, design and validation. His work also encompasses the semantics issue.

Ryszard Kowalczyk is Professor in Intelligent Systems and head of the Centre for Intelligent Agents and Multi-Agent Systems in the School of Information Technology at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. Prof. Kowalczyk has recently joined the University after several years working with a large government research organisation and corporate R&D centres of multinational companies in Australia and overseas. His research interests involve autonomous decision-making, coordination and adaptation mechanisms for agent systems situated in complex dynamic environments. This includes complex agent negotiations and collective decision-making, distributed learning and adaptation, dynamic interactions and organisations, intelligent distributed systems and services, and collaborative and adaptive e-business and virtual enterprises.
Prof. Kowalczyk has 4 international patents and some 100 publications including 6 monographs and edited books, and more than 70 research papers in books, journals and international conference proceedings. He has served as a technical book review editor for Kluwer, a member of IASTED Technical Committees on Computational Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence, a member of International Review Board of Journal of Electronic Commerce in Organisations, and a regular reviewer for IEEE Trans. He also has a diverse background in business administration, computing and medical sciences, with 14 years of professional experience in the IT industry. Prior to joining the School, Dr. Lau was an assistant professor in the Business Faculty at the University of Alberta where he taught information systems to undergraduate and MBA students. His research interests include action research in virtual teams, knowledge management and use of IT in organizations. Dr Lim Ee Peng is an Associate Professor with the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He obtained his PhD from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in 1994. Upon graduation, he started his academic career at the Nanyang Technological University. In 1997, he established the Centre for Advanced Information Systems and was appointed the Centre Director.
He has published more than 120 refereed journal and conference articles in the area of web warehousing, digital libraries, and database integration. His papers appeared at ACM Transactions on Information Systems (TOIS), IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE), Decision Support Systems (DSS), and other major journals. He is currently an Associate Editor of the ACM Transactions on Information Systems (TOIS). He is also a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Database Management (JDM). He recently co-edited a book entitled "Advances in Mobile Commerce Technologies" to be published by Idea-Group Publishing.

Dr Lim actively partcipates in conference activities. He was the Workshop Chair of the 17th International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER'98), Program Co-Chair of the 3rd and 4th ACM Workshops on Web Information and Data Management (WIDM 2001 and 2002), Program Co-Chair of the 5th International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICADL 2002) and Publicity Chair of the 12th International Workshop on Research Issues on Data Engineering: Engineering E-Commerce/E-Business Systems (RIDE-2EC'2002). Martin Lippert is a research assistant at the University of Hamburg and a
professional software architect and consultant at it-wps Workplace Solutions Ltd.
Among his current research interests are the Eclipse Core Runtime infrastructure, frameworks, refactoring, Java, extreme programming and aspect-oriented programming. He has given a number of talks, tutorials and demonstrations on various topics of software engineering at international conferences including ICSE, ECOOP, Extreme Programming, OOPSLA and HICSS. Among his publications are articles for conference proceedings, books (XP Examined, XP Perspectives) and journals. He is co-author of the book _Extreme Programming in Action: Practical Experiences from Real-World Projects_, published by Wiley in December 2002.

Andrew Lumsdaine received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1992. From 1992 through 2001, he was on the faculty in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. His research interests include computational science and engineering, parallel and distributed computing, software engineering, generic programming, mathematical software, and numerical analysis. Professor Lumsdaine is a member of ACM, IEEE, and SIAM, as well as the MPI Forum, the BLAS technical forum and the ISO C++ standards committee. In 1995, he received the NSF Career Development Award.

I am group leader of the Personal Memory Group and project manager for a number of research projects that are related to human-computer interaction, mobile systems and learning. Besides managing projects, I am busy organizing workshops, do some teaching at various universities, and supervise students.

I started my work at the European Media Laboratory in October 1997. Here, I initiated and lead a research group that works on projects dealing with mobile assistance systems, language understanding, geographical information systems, and computer vision. Currently, I manage research projects that are conducted in co-operation with various national and international institutes and companies. Before joining EML, I did a diploma at the University of Karlsruhe which I finished in 1992. Then I worked as a research scientist at the University of Karlsruhe on neural networks and did research on modeling the learning mechanisms in biological brains. My interest in understanding natural information processing in brains also led to my Ph.D. thesis in 1996. During this time, I also had some research stays at the University of California at Berkeley.

Stephen J. Mellor is Vice-President and co-founder of Project Technology, Inc., a company focused on tools to execute and translate UML models. He is active in the OMG, chairing the consortium that added executable actions to the UML, and he is now active in specifying MDA. Last year, he completed his latest book "Executable UML: A Foundation for Model-Driven Architecture." He has almost finished his latest book "MDA Distilled," available from Addison Wesley in late 2003. In his copious spare time, he is a member of the IEEE Software Industrial Advisory Board. He was a Guest Editor for a special issue on Model-Driven Development published September 2003.

Dr Greg Michaelson's interests lie in providing support for teaching and learning functional programming. From 1992 to 1995 he coordinated a TLTP funded project to extend the Ceilidh automatic assessment system to Standard ML. The system was subsequently used from 1993 to 2000 with 1st year undergraduate students. Dr Michaelson also coordinated the final user evaluation of the overall TLTP Ceilidh project. Since 1996, he has been working with Yang Jun, and Dr Phil Trinder, in investigating techniques for visualising and explaining polymorphic type checking. He has also been investigating gender effects in computer mediated cooperation, with Dr Margit Pohl of the Vienna University of Technology, since 1994.

Dr. R. Muntz was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. He received the BEE from Pratt Institute in 1963, the MEE from New York University in 1966, and the Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in 1969. He is a member of the Board of Directors for SIGMETRICS and is the current chair of IFIP Working Group 7.3. He is a past associate editor for the Journal of the ACM and was editor-in-chief of ACM Computing Surveys from 1992 to 1995. He is a member of Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery, and a Fellow of the IEEE. His current research interests are scientific batabase systems, multimedia storage and database systems, data mining and computer system performance evaluation.

Dirk Muthig is core competence manager _Software Product Lines_ at the
Fraunhofer IESE. He is responsible for the research strategy in the area of PuLSE(ProdUct Line Software Engineering) and has experience in transferring product line engineering into practice across all life-cycle stages since more than five years.
Actually, his research focuses on the integration of product line architectures,
model-driven archtiectures, and component-based developmenet. Numerous
publications were derived from this work, among them publications at ICSE, ICSR,
SPLC, in IEEE Software. Dirk gives a lecture on software product lines at
Kaiserslautern University of Technology and has also presented tutorials on
_component-based product line engineering with UML_ at several international
conferences before. He also gave several talks on _Model-driven Product Line
Architectures_ at industry events in 2002(e.g., see

1993-1999: Sr. Research Scientist at the Center for Design Research (CDR) at Stanford. Research interests: agent-based distributed process coordination, with emphasis on concurrent planning and design, using agents with shared models for change propagation.

In cooperation with Professors Larry Leifer and Mark R. Cutkosky, Dr. Petrie was part of the DARPA experiment in distributed engineering: MADEFAST. At the CDR, he implemented a generic process coordination server, called Redux', that forms the basis for a agent-based engineering framework, called ProcessLink, for the coordination of heterogeneous engineering design tools. The first application was a distributed system for the design of aircraft electrical cable systems. The current project is design of consumer electronics for Toshiba. A major result of this agent-based engineering work was the JATLite agent infrastructure.

From April, 1984, until September, 1993, Dr. Petrie was Senior Member, Technical Staff, at the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation ( MCC). He was the first person hired by Professor Woody Bledsoe for the AI Lab there, worked for Dr. Elaine Rich, and led the Proteus Project, which developed an advanced hybrid reasoning system and was the first technology to be used commercially by MCC shareholders.

Dr. Petrie is also experienced in technology transfer issues and is the subject of a case study, "Technology Transfer and MCC", in R&D Collaboration on Trial, Gibson, David V. and Rogers, Everett M., Harvard Business School Press, 1994. Dr. Petrie also worked with the MCC EINet project in developing E-commerce technology. He holds a patent for using crytographic techniques for insuring delivery of software products over the Internet.

Prior to MCC, Dr. Petrie was a project manager for Sperry Univac, and a specialist in performance analysis and benchmarking of mainframes for distributed networked systems and seismic processing.

He has a B.S. in Mathematics from LSU and a M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas. His advisor was Prof. Robert Simmons. He has published extensively in the field of knowledge representation, truth maintenance, constraint satisfaction, and inferencing architectures. He has served and continues as a reviewer, guest editor, and/or program committee member for IEEE, AIEDAM, CERA, AI, AAAI, IJCAI, ECAI, and CAIA. He has co-taught ME394: Computational Support for Team Design.

Calton's research interests are in the areas of distributed computing, Internet data management, and operating systems. In distributed systems, his focus is on extended transaction processing, system survivability, and Internet applications. In operating systems, he is applying the idea of specialization . Comparing with usual centralized systems, distributed and parallel systems softwares display unique characteristics in distance, complexity, extensibility, concurrency and availability. Making software handle these problems in a reliable and efficient way is the emphasis of Calton Pu's work. In the Infosphere project, he is developing concepts and software for Internet-scale applications driven by information flow such as real-time decision support, digital libraries, and electronic commerce. The sponsors for Calton Pu's research include both government funding agencies such as DARPA, NSF, and companies from industry such as IBM, Intel, and HP. Currently, he is mainly involved in the following two projects, in addition to several other collaborations around the world.

Amit Sheth is a professor at The University of Georgia and CTO of Semagix,Ltd. He started the LSDIS lab at Georgia in 1994. For nine years before, he served in R&D groups at Bellcore, Unisys, and Honeywell. In August 1999, Dr. Sheth founded Taalee, Inc., based on the technology developed at the LSDIS lab. While on sabbatical from Georgia, he managed Taalee as CEO until June 2001. Following the Taalee and Semagix acquisition/merger, he currently serves as the CTO and a co-founder of Semagix.
