Workshop on Agent Technologies for e-Services

ATES 2002

to be held in conjunction with Net.ObjectDays 2002 (NODe 2002)

October 7-10, 2002, Erfurt, Germany

The Internet evolves into a global, dynamic and open ecosystem of modular electronic services (e-services) that can deliver information, knowledge and decision support, perform tasks and conduct transactions, control and monitor operations, and interact and integrate with other e-services. Typical examples of e-services are Web-accessible resources and applications, Web-enabled business processes and relationships, and networked devices and portable information appliances. E-services can enable new business/service models, drive new revenue streams and offer new efficiencies through offering new opportunities for businesses to transform the existing business assets, utilities, capabilities and services into e-services and create new e-services with minimum effort and maximum benefits coming of automation, collaboration and dynamic business relationships.

To fully utilize the potential benefits and opportunities e-services require new technology and software solutions in a number of areas including automated, dynamic and collaborative discovery, composition and delivery of e-services over the wired and wireless Web. Software agents with the capabilities of autonomous reasoning, learning, adaptation, social interactions, cooperation and mobility are a very prospective technology for e-services. In particular, based on the growing success of agent technology in a wide range of related applications including e-Commerce, e-Business and mobile applications, it is envisaged that software agents can also be very useful for e-Services. The aim of the workshop is to explore and promote the use of software agent technologies for e-services including automation support for dynamic and collaborative discovery, creation, composition, execution, delivery, monitoring and management of e-services.

Topics of the Workshop

The topics of the workshop include (but are not restricted to) the following issues:

  • Agents for customer profiling and identification of needs for e-services
  • E-service modeling and description (e.g. agent-based workflow, ontology, semantic web)
  • Agent communication and interactions in e-services (e.g. ACL, protocols)
  • Agent-based e-service discovery and selection (e.g. search, filtering, brokering, matching)
  • Agents for e-service creation, composition and integration (e.g. generation, coordination, collaboration, interoperability)
  • Agent-mediated e-service contracting (e.g. RFQ, auctions, negotiations, exchanges)
  • Agents-based e-service execution and delivery (e.g. direct, ASP, e-portals, mobile, wireless)
  • Agents for e-service monitoring, control and management
  • Quality of e-services (e.g. agents for evaluation, analysis and assurance of QoS)
  • Agent-related e-service security, privacy and legal aspects
  • Agent-based platforms, infrastructure and systems for e-services
  • Agent-based e-service applications (e.g. in e-Commerce, e-Business, e-Government, e-Health, e-Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Customer Relation Management, Virtual Enterprises, networked and portable information appliances, mobile devices, multimedia e-services, etc)

Format of the Workshop

This one-day workshop aims at promoting the exchange of research results and ideas, and discussion on the use, benefits and limitations of the agent technology for e-services. A special emphasis will be devoted towards exchanging experiences on the challenging technical issues, solutions and real-world applications. A panel and an invited talk(s) by the experts in the area are also considered.

The official language of the workshop is English. The workshop presentations will be grouped into sessions to foster more focused discussions. The workshop schedule will provide time for specific discussions after the presentations as well as for the exchange of ideas across the sessions.

There will be both regular and short presentations. The regular presentations will report on the results of the completed research and the short presentations will allow for presenting work-in-progress.

Instructions for Submissions

Interested participants are strongly encouraged to submit full papers in an electronic format (pdf or postscript) to the workshop chair by 30 June 2002.

The preferred length of papers is 5000-6000 words (regular papers) and 3000-4000 words (short papers). The format for all papers will be one column, 10-point Times Roman or a similar typeface with single line spacing. The formatting instructions and templates for Word and TeX can be found at http://www.netobjectdays.org/.

The submissions will be fully reviewed by the workshop Program Committee and accepted on the basis of quality of the contributions. The accepted workshop papers will be published in the official conference proceedings and on CD-ROM. Excellent workshop papers will also be included in an extra volume of best papers published with a major publishing company.
