Call for Papers

Messekongresszentrum Erfurt, Germany
October 9 12, 2000
After their great individual success,
JavaDays, JIT, DJEK and STJA conferences
(incl. GCSE) have now merged to form an even more attractive
event: the Net.ObjectDays 2000 conference.
The JavaDays was the German Java event
last year in Düsseldorf.
Net.ObjectDays 2000 embraces object-oriented
topics such as Java, Smalltalk, components, UML, embedded
Java, databases and generative design methodologies.
And, at the same time it addresses the way how the internet
is radically changing best programming practices by
covering XML, E-commerce, security and web-based computing.
Like its predecessors, Net.ObjectDays 2000
bridges the gap between universities and industry, between
research and application. The conference provides a
forum for OO- and web-developers both from industry
and universities and for decision makers who will learn
to look behind and beyond vendor presentations. The
conference offers a variety of scientific and application
related talks, tutorials, an exhibition, a vendor session
and it carries on to present invited talks from respected
international experts and trendsetters.
The scientific program is run by four program committees,
each with its own Call for Papers:
A couple of workshops accompany the
scientific conference. This is the
Call for Papers for the
Workshop on "Java and Databases:
Persistence Options"
Today, many companies are making an
expensive shift to object technology. Currently Java
is evolving from a programming language to a development
platform consisting of Java SDK, Java Swing, JavaBeans,
EJB, JNDI, JMS, JSP, JDBC, SQLJ, JTA etc. Obviously
real-world objects can easily be modelled in a Java
program or applet. However, little is known about what
experiences users have in combining Java and databases,
for example:
- Which progress is made regarding development?
- Which progress is made regarding maintenance?
- Which new problems have to be considered?
These questions are particularly important, since Java
technology like many new technologies can result in
changes in the way things "get done". Furthermore, companies
are acting globally and need wide distributed applications
with stable and efficient data stores to provide "just-in-time"
information via an intranet or extranet. Java technology
becomes the standard platform for such distributed/intranet/
extranet applications.
This workshop aims to bring together academics, users
and practitioners. The goal is to discuss some of the
issues and problems that they have experienced, what
solutions they have developed and what lessons they
have learned. The workshop will be divided into four
sessions, three of which will be reserved for participant
presentations and one for a panel discussion at the
end of the day.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- ORDBs (DB2, Informix, Oracle)
- Java to relational mapping tools
- JDBC
- SQLJ
- OODBs (GemStone, Jasmine, Objectivity/DB, ObjectStore,
Poet, VERSANT)
- Java binding of the ODMG standard
- Schema evolution
- Rapid prototyping
- Database access in multi-tier applications
- Coexistence with legacy applications
- Migration of legacy applications
- Case studies
- Product comparisons/evaluations
- Performance studies
- Benchmarks
Submission Guidelines:
» Research Papers: (max. 10 pages DIN A4) «
» Experience Report: (from 4 to max. 10 pages
A4) «
Research contributions are expected
to assess the proposed approach with respect to its
practical relevance, while industrial papers should
highlight open problems and resulting challenges for
research. The workshop language is English.
Accepted contributions will be published in proceedings
in printed and electronic (CD-ROM) form. We intend to
invite authors of excellent submissions to provide a
possibly extended version of their work (in English)
for a book published by a major publishing company.
