Computing Fairy Tales(or: What We All Know to be True)
-
09:30 - 10:30 at 12.10.2000, in track "Tracks 1 und 2"
[keynote]
Abstract:
This talk presents a look at the software industry and the practices that
are rampant therein, muses about the utility (or otherwise) of
current-generation computer systems, and challenges some of the so-called
"accepted wisdom" that is passed down from generation to generation of
engineers. Currently, creation of software is not an engineering discipline
but akin to alchemy; this talk presents some of the problems the industry
will have to solve in order to be taken seriously (and suggests to abandon
the search for the Philosopher's Stone of software engineering).

Designing for change, a dynamic perspective
-
08:30 - 09:30 at 12.10.2000, in track "Tracks 3 und 4"
[keynote]
Abstract:
Despite advances over the past decades in software engineering and
process methodologies, not many IT projects seem particularly well
adapted to today's fast-paced world. Most project managers like to know
all specs up front, and change is almost treated as an afterthought,
something that is not part of the normal development process. Yet, in
general, users do not know all the requirements now and then, they have
no good idea of what the new technology is going to do for them neither
how it is going to influence their organization. And after the project
is finished, they do not want to rely forever on the original IT people
whenever a change requirement comes in, however trivial. Thus software
developers must start to acknowledge change and even uncertainty as a
given rather than the exception that should be studiously avoided, and
they must adapt their techniques accordingly.
Some business domains have seen attempts to address this situation.
Several workflow vendors, for instance, have been marketing change and
end-user programmability as major assets of their products. But, in
general, they have been strangely ignorant of (good) modern software
engineering practices, and the results have not really lived up to the
claims. But we may expect a revival on a grander scale: the ability to
(re) define the business logic on the fly is becoming a crucial asset
when businesses re-align their core processes around the Internet.
The Internet is transforming the way we envision and design
applications. While we could build yesterday's simple Web applications
with, let's face it, primitive techniques, this is simply no longer
true. High-volume databases, long-term transactions, interoperability,
distributed objects, re-use, these are some of the technical issues that
must be dealt with. But the real challenge will be to leverage all this
technology: we must empower the user to set up, maintain and change his
applications more easily.
We need dynamic systems, where applications can be changed at run-time,
preferably by end-users. Above all, we need appropriate architectural
techniques. In this presentation we explore the use of dynamic object
models. It turns out that the basic concepts are fairly simple. As for
the difficulties, we can borrow solutions from other disciplines in
computer science. If we do it right, we can even make the system work
for itself.

Don't Swing - Shipping a Java Desktop Application with a Pure Native Feel
-
14:00 - 15:00 at 11.10.2000, in track "Tracks 1 und 2"
[keynote]
Abstract:
You need to ship a Java application that looks like a native app, runs
fast, and is portable to other platforms. Not an easy position to begin
with.
This talk zooms into the development of a now shipping Java product that
was faced with these requirements. It will take an in-depth look at the
techniques
we have used to build the application and present how we leveraged Java.
The product is an integrated development environment for Java that was
built
from scratch in Java. It is targeted towards the development of embedded
solutions for
devices like PDAs or cell phones.

The Role of Enterprise Java and EJBs in Corporate Computing
-
14:00 - 15:00 at 12.10.2000, in track "Tracks 3 und 4"
[keynote]
Abstract:
There is a lot of interest in the role and use of Enterprise Java and
Enterprise Java Beans, but most of it is focused on new web and e-business
applications. Despite all the fuss, e-business application development is
not the only game in town, not by a long way. So, is there a role for
Enterprise Java, EJBs in corporate computing ? Mark will discuss some of
the key issues, review some key corporate customer development projects he
has been involved in and IBM future technology directions.

Collaborative Software Engineering
-
14:00 - 15:00 at 12.10.2000, in track "Tracks 1 und 2"
[keynote]
Abstract:
Although much of the research and practice of software engineering has long
involved questions around how to structure and manage team work, the
availability of Internet access has changed the answers. The opportunity
for remote access to people, information, tools, components, and meetings,
impacts both what engineers do and how they do it. There is increased
attention to decentralized management, building experience knowledge bases,
and negotiating for engineering resources (people and reusable knowledge
assets). This shift is to a more collaborative work structure and a need to
better understand how to model work environments that can be molded by team
members. With increased use of network-based communications and
conversations, collaborative software engineering practices place higher
value on team interaction skills and reflective practices. This talk will
discuss what we currently do and do not know about what it means to be a
collaborative software engineer.

The Computer Revolution Hasn't Happened
Yet
-
10:00 - 11:00 at 10.10.2000, in track "Tracks 1 bis 4"
[keynote]
Abstract:
The printing press was invented in the middle of the 15th century, yet it
took 100 years before a book was considered dangerous enough to be banned.
150 years before science was invented, almost 200 years before a new kind of
political essay was invented, and more than 300 hundred years before a
country with an invented political system (the US) could be argued into
existence via the press and a citizenry that could understand the arguments.
Schooling and general literacy were also fruits of the press, and also took
many centuries to become established. The commercial computer is now about
50 years old and is still imitating the paper culture that came before it,
just as the printing press did with the manuscript culture it gradually
replaced. No media revolution can be said to have happened without a
general establishment of "literacy":
fluent "reading" and "writing" at the highest level of ideas that the medium can
represent. With computers, we are so far from that fluent literacy -- or
even understanding what that literacy should resemble -- that we could
claim that the computer revolution hasn't even started. This talk will try
to put a shape to the real computer revolution to come.

Object, components and contracts
-
15:00 - 16:00 at 10.10.2000, in track "Tracks 1 bis 4"
[keynote]
Abstract:
The world of advanced software technology is in a state
of constant flux, and it's difficult for decision-makers
and developers to know what bandwagon to jump on.
This talk will attempt to present a calmer perspective
by focusing on a handful of ideas that can have a real
impact on the years to come. It will examine in particular
the future of object technology, the state of component-based
development (in the light of new contributions such as
Microsoft's .NET technology and C# language), the role of
Design by Contract, the contribution of other approaches such
as formal specifications, and the Eiffel perspective on these
issues and trends.

Smalltalk and XML
-
09:30 - 10:30 at 11.10.2000, in track "Tracks 3 und 4"
[keynote]
Abstract:
This talk will focus on expressing Smalltalk object models
seamlessly as XML objects. While everyone knows about the purity and elegance of Smalltalk, and everyone has heard about XML, few people know that
Smalltalk has good support for XML. Indelv Corporation released an open
source (non validating) XML framework three years ago, and Cincom
released the VisualWorks (validating) XML framework open source last
year. Since then, numerous developers have ported the XML framework to
other Smalltalk dialects. Numerous end users have developed systems for
exporting Smalltalk objects in XML so that they can be easily exported
to any foreign business system.
With the advent of SOAP, it also appears as if XML may be used for
even wider ranging interoperability, in ways that do not require the overhead
of a full CORBA system. XML is being used by the Smalltalk vendors as
well; it is used as the source representation by VisualWorks. With
XML's future so bright, and Smalltalk poised to take advantage of it,
anything is possible!

Software Development by Refinement
-
09:30 - 10:30 at 12.10.2000, in track "Tracks 3 und 4"
[keynote]
Abstract:
This talk presents a mechanizable framework for software development by refinement. The idea is to incrementally refine formal requirement spoecifications into code, preserving correctness along the way as design decisions are introduced. Our approach to refinement uniquely focuses on representing knowledge about programming concepts, such as algorithm design and datatype refinement, by means of taxonomies of design theories. Refinements
are constructed via the composition of requirements and design knowledge.
The framework is partially implemented in the research systems Specware, Designware, and Planware. Specware provides basic support for composing specifications and refinements, and generating code. Specware is intended to be general-purpose and has found use in industrial settings. Designware extends Specware with taxonomies of software design theories and support for constructing refinements from them. Planware builds on Designware to provide highly automated support for requirements acquisition and synthesis of high-performance scheduling algorithms.

XML Technologies - Creating frameworks and vocabularies to support eCommerce
-
08:30 - 09:30 at 11.10.2000, in track "Tracks 3 und 4"
[keynote]
Abstract:
XML has received a lot of attention as the new "panacea" technology since
its publication as a W3C Recommendation in 1998. However, XML and its
satellite standards are only a part of the solution to increased business
efficiencies on the Web. These Recommendations form a strong foundation, but
more work is needed.
On top of these recommendations there must be an agreed framework for their
use. Additionally, each industry must build its own vocabulary, its own
schema. This presentation provides an introduction to two major work items,
ebXML and XML.org.
ebXML is an initiative, sponsored jointly by UN/CEFACT and OASIS, to define
a framework for using XML for eCommerce. Topics covered include a review of
the mission and work of ebXML, an overview of the committees, and a status
report on their work one year into their 18 month project.
XML.org is a registry and repository for XML DTDs, Schemas, and other
entities. The presentation will cover a review of the compelling
requirements for a registry, how such a registry will support eCommerce, how
the registry/repository relates to the ebXML framework, and a brief overview
of some of the applications that have been registered.

The Theory and Practice of Adaptive Components
-
14:00 - 15:00 at 11.10.2000, in track "Track 3"
[keynote]
Sesson slides (.PDF)
Abstract:
It is well known that modifying software by hand, especially someone else’s, is not only slow and tedious but so notoriously error-prone that we strive for components that never need changing - black-box building blocks.
Unfortunately, we lack the omniscience required to engineer such parts, especially when our problem domains are ill-defined. A promising alternative is to make each component adaptive in a simple mark-up language (e.g.,
frame technology) converts each component’s properties (i.e., granularities that are meaningful within a given domain) into a default value that can be overridden or extended by other components in a rapid yet reliable
manner. Adaptive components constitute a gray-box strategy - black when their properties fit the context as is, otherwise white. The approach works by automating the tedious and error-prone aspects of construction and
modification, while localizing all the unique properties of an object or program in its root component. Each root exercises complete control over the structure and content of the code that its hierarchy of components the
structure and content of the code that its hierarchy of components emits. Such custom roots constitute only 5% -15% of a typical system. In other words, 85% - 95% reuse is the norm. Along with independently gathered
statistical evidence of efficacy in constructing and evolving business systems of up to 10 million lines of code, the further implications of adaptive components for software engineering are presented.

From the W3C´s XPath to Tamino´s X-Query
-
08:30 - 09:30 at 11.10.2000, in track "Tracks 1 und 2"
[keynote]
Abstract:
In 1999 the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) released
XPath as the standard for localizing data within XML
documents. Also in 1999 Software AG launched Tamino,
a database that natively stores XML instances. Tamino
offers a query interface utilizing a proprietary XML
localization language X-Query. The XPath - X-Query
pair is an interesting example for the relationship
between standards and their realizations.

Aufbau und Verwaltung von EJB Komponenten innerhalb einer technischen Portal Architektur mit WebLogic Commerce Server
-
16:30 - 17:00 at 10.10.2000, in track "Track 4"
[in session "eBusiness"
starting at 16:30
]
Abstract:
The BEA WebLogic Commerce Server (WLCS) components allow companies to quickly assemble extensible and scalable e-Commerce solutions. The kit includes more than 80 pre-built, pre-tested components such as customer, session, order, item, shopping advisor, trouble ticket, inventory, and invoice. Together with a robust set of foundation classes, the WebLogic Commerce Server provides up to 80% of common e-business functions and allows enterprises to focus on building their unique competitive advantage.
In the process of planning e-Business applications, corporations are faced with a build or buy decision. Building an application of this kind from the ground up would consume considerable time and resources. On the other hand, an off-the-shelf application does not meet the company's unique needs. The best solution is to use components. Components are packages of pre-built business functions that jump-start the development of an e-Business application. Components allow developers to customize and snap together enterprise applications quickly, while tailoring them to specific business needs. The result is a complete solution that takes advantage of EJB technology without its time-consuming complexities.
What are Commerce Server components?
Commerce Server components are software building blocks for e-Business that can be selected and snapped together to create a robust e-Commerce Web presence. With WebLogic Commerce Servers components developers do not need to start from scratch or master EJB complexities. By using WLCS components, they can build e-Business applications customized for a company's unique business needs in record time frames.Components can be used as is, or customized or extended it to fit particularly unique aspects of your business scenario.
The components themselves are Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) built to the EJB 1.1 specification for a scalable, robust, industry-standard solution. The WLCS components family is structured as packages, each of which contains a set of components that plays a specific role in assembling an enterprise application. WLCS provides industry specific component packages for financial services, telecommunications, and Internet retail. Today WLCS includes component packages required to build e-business applications, with an emphasis on Internet
e-Commerce and customer self-service. For a comprehensive look at the components offered and the features they provide, see the full-fledged WebLogic Commerce Server components overview and the list of all component packages in the Components Catalog.

Building a Java Framework
-
15:30 - 16:00 at 11.10.2000, in track "Track 3"
[in session "Java and EJB 1"
starting at 15:30

Abstract:

Component-Based Product Line Engineering

[in session "Framework"

Sesson slides (.PDF)
Abstract:
Component-based software engineering is expected to radically change the
way in which future software systems are developed and maintained. However,
to date, existing component technologies have only significantly penetrated
the "implementation" and "deployment" phases of large software projects,
with the result that many of the potential benefits of components are lost
during earlier development phases such as analysis and design. The KobrA
method, developed at Fraunhofer IESE within the BMBF-funded KobrA project,
addresses this problem by supporting a higher-level, UML-based
representation of components which makes them the focus of the entire
software lifecycle, and by utilizing a product line approach to their
development, maintenance and deployment. In addition, by explicitly
separating concerns for composition, product variability and
implementation, the approach is compatible with most implementation
technologies (including JavaBeams, COM and CORBA), and allows component and
product line concepts to be introduced incrementally. In this talk Dirk
Muthig will provide an overview of the key features of the KobrA method,
and explain its relationship to other well-known methods.

-
17:30 - 18:00 at 10.10.2000, in track "Track 3"
[in session "XML in Datenbanken und Datenflüssen"
starting at 16:30
]
Abstract:
XML is perfect for exchanging objects between applications. Developing
applications, which use XML to exchange objects, includes the design
of XML objects.
How do Java applications manage XML objects? The answer to this first
question covers the following topics:
- Generic XML Interfaces: There are several standard Java APIs to XML
objects that allow applications to access and update the content and
structure of XML objects: the Document Object Model (DOM) and the
Simple API for XML (SAX).
- XML Data Binding: This approach provides a mapping between XML objects
and Java objects. At runtime, XML objects are parsed into Java objects
("unmarshalling"). This allows XML-enabled Java applications direct and
fast access to XML. In the opposite direction, Java objects can be
written into an XML object stream ("marshalled").
XML is great for exchanging objects between applications, either over a
network or over time (persistence). If XML objects shall be stored permanently, object-oriented database systems (OODBMS) provide an adequate solution. Their capability to efficiently store and retrieve complex objects and networks of objects make them the perfect solution for persisting XML objects.

Abstract:

-
17:30 - 18:00 at 10.10.2000, in track "Track 1"
[in session "Software Specification and Management in Practice"
starting at 16:30
]
Abstract:

Abstract:
An often mentioned obstacle for the consistent use of distributed object and component technology, such as CORBA and Enterprise Java Beans, for B2B platforms and application systems is the problematic co-existence of CORBA and EJB with firewalls. The presentation will cover these problems in detail, discuss several solutions to the problem, and introduce IIOP-Application-Level-Firewalls as the high-security solution, which settles the middleware-firewall conflict and can also be used as a comprehensive and easily deployable (pluggable) security solution for CORBA and Java based B2B application systems, thus providing an alternative to the still lacking security functionality of many ORB and EJB Application Server products. Aspects detailed in the presentation are user authentication, access control, and the integration with enterprise user management and security infrastructures, such as PKIs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
immer komplizierter. Aus Sicherheitsgründen findet meist eine Trennung der
Komponenten WWW-/Applikations-/DB-Server durch eine Firewall statt. Diese Trennung verkompliziert die Verwaltung erheblich. Oftmals muß darüberhinaus

Abstract:

Refactoring the Unified Software Development Process

Abstract:
The standardization of UML and maybe soon of the Unified Software Development Process (USDP) leads to high acceptance of approaches employing them both. Often a project would progress faster by using a more lightweight process like eXtreme Programming (XP). But since XP is not widely enough accepted, people are looking for a way to introduce XP without mentioning the name of the process at the beginning. Further more - naming is just one thing, the other is how to make XP appear as if it would be USDP without being trapped by the heavier process.
We want to show that, despite all differences, XP and the USDP have much more in common than is commonly assumed. We want to show a bridge between those processes. They provide both several commonalities, where the main are:
o The people who live inside the process are dominant for the process, or the other way round: If the process is not accepted by the people it can not be used for the project.
o USDP as well as XP regard the use cases (or user stories) of the system as the base unit. The realization of the use cases form the contents of a release. The use cases are used to verify that the goals of the system are met.
o Both processes employ incremental and iterative development, where both believe that it is important to keep the cycles really small.
This article shows, that if a team is forced to follow the USDP, but would like to use a lighter process like XP, it can do so. The USDP provides a framework in which XP can live.

A Smart Client Architecture for eBusiness Applications

Abstract:
During the past years, the classical client server program design went out of fashion. This happened because of design mistakes due to overemphasizing client autonomy and placing all business logic into the client: the fat client.
The upcoming internet era with the WEB-Browser as client platform, has yielded a new design paradigm: the leightweight thin client. Due to the lack of bandwidth and the need for short download times, the client has been reduced to pure presentation logic - business logic has been banned to the server side. There are many examples of eBusiness applications, built this way, that show serious drawbacks too. The most disadvantageous are the lack of scalability and interactivity. The short download time has been payed with the click and wait syndrome.
We believe, that the goal is to combine the diametral requirements of short application startup time and high interactivity: the smart client. Smart client means, that the business logic is carefully separated between client and server side and that the client is as autonomous and leightweight as possible. This architecture is more scalable, more interactive and can reduce program complexity.
We present a smart client architecture based on Java applet technology, that has proven its superiority to the thin client approach in several eBusiness applications, that master multi million Euro turnover volumes. Furthermore the presentation gives many examples of the design patterns and techniques used and their mappings to Java code, as well as a demo.

Sourceguard - wirkungsvoller Schutz von Java-Quellcode gegen Dekompilierung
-

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
GSM),

Abstract:

Abstract:
"The practices that make up XP can be learned by anyone who has convinced
someone else to pay them to program. That isn't the hard part. The hard part
is putting all the pieces together, and then keeping them in balance" (see [1],
p. 151). Although the new methodology of eXtreme Programming involves the
use of many simple, intuitive practices, it includes other practices and techniques
that go against the learners instincts and habits. eXtreme Programming must be
learned, and the successful application of the methodology is largely dependent
upon the ability of the developer to keep all elements and practices in balance
throughout the whole lifecycle of the software. We maintain that the use of a
coach is necessary to successfully learn XP, and to guarantee the balance in the
development process.

with wireless connections. We will give you an under-the-hood view (including status and roadmap) of J2ME technologies along with K Virtual Machine (KVM), KVM development tools, and related MID APIs. We will also discuss technologies used to connect these devices to consumer and enterprise services, including
standard data formats (WML, Compact HTML and XHTML/XML) as well as neutral wire
protocols (most importantly, HTTP/HTTPS and WAP protocols).
The session assumes attendees will be deploying applications in J2ME
technology-based environments. Its material is targeted to developers with
intermediate to advanced experience in the Java programming language and the
Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SETM) APIs, but with little direct
experience with consumer or embedded device programming.

Abstract:
The Electronic Business XML Initiative (www.ebxml.org) is a
worldwide project to standardize the exchange of electronic business
data. Sponsored by the UN/CEFACT and OASIS, ebXML will lower the
barrier-of-entry to electronic business and facilitate trade, particularly for
small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and developing nations. ebXML
is supported by hundreds of industry consortia, standards bodies and
companies from around the world.
Participation in ebXML is open, and representatives from all
industries are invited to contribute to the development of the initiative.
Presentation Synopsis
---------------------
ebXML; Acronym Soup or The Next Big Thing?
The Electronic Business XML or ebXML initiative combines the
best of the new Web technology with previous experience of electronic
transactions, and promises to extend the benefits of business data exchange to
companies of all sizes anywhere in the world.
The last year has seen an explosion in initiatives to provide
the infrastructure that enables small, medium and large
organisations to conduct business electronically using the Internet.
Many of the initiatives share common requirements in core infrastructure
and to reduce reinvention and the risks of incompatibility. In November 1999,
the UN CEFACT and OASIS organisations came together to form the ebXML
initiative to develop a global infrastructure for electronic business,
based on public, proven standards, and being freely open to all.
It represents the only global initiative of its type in the industry today.
As a result it now has the global backing and
participation of large and small vendors, key industry groups
from both the EDI and XML worlds, and end-users.
The first phase of this 18-month work is now nearing
completion and is defining the framework by which all enterprises, irrespective
of size, location and implementation will interact and do business.
This presentation provides an insight into the ongoing work of ebXML and will
discuss the architecture defining the framework and how the
specifications for transport, business process, registry and repository
and core components fit together.

Acht Strategien zum Erfolgsunternehmen im Internet

Abstract:
- Start-up klingt nicht umsonst wie Wake-up.

Abstract:
Unlike in buildings, one cannot see the structure or in other words the architecture of a software system. So why should anyone care about an architectural style for something one cannot see? The answer is simple: because a homogeneous architectural style adds structure to a system, which in turn enables one to effectively determine the system's strong points as well as its weak points and to improve it accordingly. By structuring the components of a software system based on a common style, one can restrict the design choices to a clear set of blueprints and apply a predefined design method. For example, the proper use of OO is not an object-oriented concept - it is an architectural concept.
The tutorial introduces the architectural style of the Convergent Architecture (CA), which consolidates years of project experience. It gives you an overview of the concepts, the process as well as the supporting tool set.
The Convergent Architecture is a complete coverage architectural style with:
· A clear architectural metamodel based on open systems analysis, knowledge management, full-cycle OO paradigm and other concepts of Convergent Engineering_,
· A component metamodel,
· A full life-cycle development process,
· A formal technology projection to open standards,
· A full coverage tool suite supporting the architectural style.
CA enables the alignment of business and software engineering. The CA/ArcStyler is an instance of the Rational Unified Process and is likewise applicable to existing development processes. It integrates with Rational Rose and adds an architectural style to it. Based on a solid introduction into the concepts, a practical example will be developed together with the audience. Life demonstration of the toolset illustrates the applicability of the tools and the concepts.

Abstract:
Using only traditional techniques, the implementation of concerns like exception handling, multi-object protocols, tracing, and security policies tends to be spread out in the code. The lack of modularity for these concerns makes them difficult to develop and maintain. This tutorial will show how to use aspect-oriented programming to implement concerns like these in a concise modular way. We will discuss the effect aspects have on code modularity and on software design. The tutorial will work with AspectJ, a freely available -- and recently Open Source'd -- aspect-oriented extension to the Java(tm) programming language.

Abstract:
This tutorial provides an introduction to formal methods for software development and the automation of these methods. The focus is on the composition of large formal specifications, and the refinement of specifications into efficient code. The foundations for specification composition and refinement
are provided by category-theoretic concepts such as diagrams and
colimits. Another key focus is on the representation of programming
knowledge via formal specifications and refinements. Topics include
application-specific domain theories, formal requirement specifications, representation and use of programming knowledge, software architectures, algorithm and data structure design, program optimization techniques, datatype refinement, code generation, and system support. The generation of high-performance scheduling algorithms will be discussed in detail.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Operating at construction time, adaptive components can reduce not only
the time needed to build/evolve complex software but also the errors that
programmers typically make. Organized into "parts explosion" hierarchies,
each part is the root of a subtree (lattice) such that it localizes all
the context sensitive information sufficient to adapt the subtree into an
integrated source module. This tutorial explains the concepts via frame
technology, a specific means of effecting the automated assembly of
source modules from adaptive components, called frames. Examples and case
studies are provided to illustrate the concepts and the huge savings in
time and effort that the approach affords.

Sesson slides (.PDF)
Abstract:
Generative Programming offers software productivity enhancements by
automating code generation. To succeed,
one must choose components and automate their composition.
Program transformation systems are an extremely versatile foundation
for defining components and their composition.
>From a more conventional software lifecycle point of view,
transformation systems can also provide considerable
productivity and quality. Finally, there is a strong connection
between generating software and understanding/modifying software
based on the transformational relation between a specification and
code.
Transformation systems use generalized compiler technology to analyze,
modify, generate and/or reshape existing code. An
engineer-customizable base of "transforms" (a kind of generative reuse
of programming knowledge) enables custom analyses, generation
and modifications to large-scale software systems. Examples include
redocumenting code, reverse/re-engineering, refactoring OO frameworks,
porting to new platforms, rearranging system structure, etc. EURO
currency remediation is a very interesting special case (as was
Y2K); these will reappear in the future in the form of longer SSNs,
phone numbers, etc.
This tutorial presents a unified framework covering the theory and
implementation of transformation systems, including parsing,
pretty-printing, transforms, metaprogramming, and especially a theory
of software maintenance using transformational foundations. It
will cover a number of practical issues related to all of the above,
including scaling to handle large software systems. A number of
existing transformation tools will be examined, to show how they fit
into the framework. Finally, a number of sample applications
will be shown, including detection and removal of duplicate code from
real million-line systems in COBOL and Java.
This new class of tools will become a part of every software
engineer's toolkit over the next decade, just like editors, compilers,
linkers and debuggers. The tutorial will provide the researcher and
the practitioner alike with the necessary background to
understand where these tools are useful, and how to determine the
capabilities and limitations of a particular system. This will
enable them to start performing previously impractical software
engineering and software maintenance tasks.

Abstract:
The mutation method tests programs by examining a set of alternate programs (mutants) of the original program. We have extended the mutation testing method to be applicable for OO programs. The method, termed Class Mutation, is a form of OO-directed selective mutation testing that focuses on plausible flaws
related to the unique features in OO (Java) programming. This paper introduces the Class Mutation technique and describes the results of the case study performed to verify the technique.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the practical usability of the Object Constraint Language (OCL). Pitfalls for untrained persons are uncovered, and strategies for avoiding them are discussed. These strategies are not restricted to OCL-specific problems but give insights how tohandle formal specification, modeling,
implementation, and verification issues within a single framework. The implementation of the identified strategies and their integration into a widely used commercial CASE tool is currently under way within the KeY project.

Abstract:
Research into software architectures has traditionally addressed
architecture description languages and architectural styles. The
industrial focus is on middleware-based approaches to software
architecture. Middleware is layered between applications and network
operating systems and aims to resolve heterogeneity and distribution in
a transparent way. We present an architectural style that integrates
real-time financial data feeds and identify a judicious combination of
object middleware and markup languages that is suitable for the
implementation of the style. In this combination object middleware
implements reliable data transport and markup languages, particularly
the eXtensible Markup Language (XML), are used to express
semi-structured data in heterogeneous representations. We discuss the
need for semantic transformations between different representations and
demonstrate how they can be achieved using markup technology. We present
performance and scalability measurements, which show that the
combination of object middleware and markup languages scales to the
requirements that are, for example, expressed in the finance industry.

Abstract:
Process diversity is necessary as soon as different components are integrated to one product. Diversity means that within the organizational process, the need to tailor and select the respective applicable process elements is maintained.
If organizational learning and synergy are desired, managed process diversity is the answer. The paper describes the approach used in Alcatel_s Switching and
Routing Business to manage process diversity. The article outlines the needs, evaluates the commercially available process and workflow modeling tools, and finally describes the methodology and tool support introduced in Alcatel
over the past 2 years. Experiences as well as the benefits are investigated.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper describes 7HPSWR, an object-oriented framework that supports creating, running and managing regression tests in Java. Key objectives of 7HPSWR are the handling of both, unit and acceptance tests within an object-oriented framework, the establishment of an XML-based repository for test reports, and the unified management of test reports within a distributed infrastructure. The proposed management is based on concepts of modern document management systems such as the archiving, accessing and presenting of fine-grained documents. We argue that the design of test reports and test
information as structured fine-grained XML-documents empowers an object-oriented infrastructure for generating test reports and deploying test management facilities in large-scale application domains, even within the Web.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Problemstellung

Abstract:
Component-based development shows huge promise in providing functional reuse to application developers. However, before the software development community can reap the full benefits of this reuse, we need both a solid technical infrastructure to build on and an architectural approach which encourages consistent approaches to component development and assembly. The Enterprise JavaBeansTM architecture provides a strong technical infrastructure and this session will describe how we can use that infrastructure, both to develop functional components of varying granularity, and to compose those components into assembled applications. By taking a case study from requirements through implementation, we will describe a model which supports varying levels of component reuse, including reuse of technical services, functional frameworks and coarse-grained functional and technical components. Along the way, we will describe examples of key technical capabilities you should look for in an Enterprise JavaBeans technology-enabled server when planning your own component-based development.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Object-oriented software development has proven effective for systems
development, but is still insufficient for the creation of reusable and
changeable software architectures. Design patterns partly address these
shortcomings by capturing the expertise for reusable design solutions.
However, so far there is no methodical approach to providing conceptual
design building blocks in tangi-ble and composable form. Design
components have been suggested to address this problem. The goal in
using design components is manifold: provide design expertise in
composable form, provide design constraints to prohibit known design
flaws, document designs and design decisions, and prohibit design
blurring and degradation during subsequent modifications.

Abstract:
Frameworks embed domain-specific customization options, models and even
languages, but these are usually implicit, buried in code. This makes
application instantiation and evolution more rigid and less accessible
to end-users.
In this tutorial we present techniques that help reify the hidden models
and languages. Instead of extending the framework's default behavior we
specify the domain model and logic in a high-level way. The framework's
components and tools interpret this meta-information at run-time. When
the specifications change, the system adapts itself dynamically.
People initially often fear that such systems are too complex to build
and understand, and that performance is bad. We discover that the
complexity is often due to multiple, shifting perspectives and to a lack
of appropriate tools. We also show that we can apply many common
software-engineering techniques to deal with performance issues.
We illustrate the techniques by means of real-world examples.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
There are exciting new developments in Software Engineering: New "post-object-oriented" programming paradigms such as Aspect-Oriented Programming and Intentional Programming are emerging, and classic Domain Engineering methods are being integrated with object-oriented and component-based programming. Generative Programming builds upon these new developments to support the design and implementation of generative models of system families, which allow a specification-based generation of family members from reusable components. In this tutorial, the authors of the book "Generative Programming: Methods, Tools, and Techniques" (Addison-Wesley, 2000) will present the basic motivation for the shift to software system family engineering, an overview of the process of generative programming and its work products, and an in-depth case study demonstrating all the steps from analysis to a C++ implementation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The tutorial "Java and Distributed Systems" will explain Java's
possibilities to implement distributed systems. In a first part Java-RMI
(Remote Method Invocation) is explained. Starting with the necessary
networking theory, the tutorial will examine an example application
(e-commerce) to illustrate the RMI technology. The second part of the
tutorial covers Java and CORBA. After an introduction to the concepts
behind CORBA, the example application of the first part will be
re-designed
in order to implement a distributed CORBA application. This part also
contains an in-depth comparison between RMI and CORBA. The third part of
the tutorial contains an outlook towards recent developments, for
example
JINI and Enterprise Java Beans.
The tutorial is intended for beginners who already know the Java
language
but want to extend their knowledge about Java and distributed systems.

Abstract:
Bereich eingebetteter Systeme adressiert.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
While implementing an object model based on persistent data, there is a need for defining which object or object parts (attributes/associations) should be made persistent and to which persistent representation they are explicitly mapped. Furthermore, as object models change during implementation, there has to be a safe way for a corresponding change of the persistent model and the migration of the persistent data.
Although the Interface Definition Language, CORBA and COM/DCOM provide a way for defining persistency and/or access to persistent data, the rules and the doing for transferring transitory data to the underlying persistent storage system and vice versa has to be explicitly done by the application.
In this paper, the experience of developing and using the DRBMT (Data Request Broker Mapping Tool) in different projects is described, with special respect to versioning of object models and persistent models.

Abstract:
This paper describes the technological architecture under implementation in a project called SIT-IN. Aim of the project is the integration of a number of legacy territorial systems in a new spatio-temporal system, for providing a territorial reference framework to statistics users and producers. The architecture is based on a flexible and scalable central component implemented in Java and supported by a self-describing relational database. A common relational repository enforces coherence between the territorial objects and their spatial representations. A prototype has been fully implemented and is currently being extended to become the first release of the final system.

Abstract:
The E-Business market is growing and the way of doing business is changing dramatically. New technologies are combined to provide a scalable, performant, reliable and secure infrastructure. It's a real challenge for the IT managers and architects to deal with the complexity of the new applications - or better components and integrated services.
There are a lot of new promising technologies and tools - like EJB servers and they are selected as the foundation of the IT infrastructure of the upcoming architecture. Designing and implementing a sound infrastructure which is able to deal with the requirements from today and tomorrow (which are not known yet) is challenge.
Scalability and performance are critical issues and cannot be solved only with better hardware. "Many people are under the misconception that scalability is a function of hardware.", Patricia Seybold Group. The software solution is a persistent cache in the middle tier.
So having a persistent cache is an enabling factor and a core part of the new IT infrastructures. The cache provides a very fast access to the business objects, "work in progress" transactions and metadata. The foundation of the persistent cache is a scalable, performant ODBMS which allows to store Java objects seamless without any mapping code.
The following article summarizes the experiences made at several customers and explain why, when and how to use a middle tier cache.

Abstract:
The Hamburger Hafen- und Lagerhaus AG decided to use the JavaTM 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition, building its software for a new container terminal. While the new system uses an object oriented data store, existing data must also be accessed. These data reside in a legacy system, written in M, formerly known as MUMPS. We discuss the resulting requirements on the data handling as well as the solutions chosen in our project. Since data access through procedures is common in many legacy systems, our solutions hold regardless of M.
